JCDecaux Reports
Carbon Footprint
Per Campaign

From 2022, we report the carbon footprint per campaign. JCDecaux collaborates with ClimatePartner, an internationally recognized expert in climate protection and sustainability, to calculate and reduce CO2 emissions. ClimatePartner calculates the carbon footprint for all (D)OOH campaigns according to the Greenhouse Gas Protocol (GHG Protocol), and bases climate neutrality on PAS 2060 and ISO 14021. The Greenhouse Gas Protocol is the most established standard for calculating and reporting greenhouse gas emissions. It is designed to facilitate organizations’ reporting of greenhouse gas emissions and to make climate reporting more transparent, consistent, and comparable across organizations. How it works

JCDecaux now reports the carbon footprint per campaign. To make this possible, we collaborate with ClimatePartner, an internationally recognized expert in climate protection and sustainability, who calculates the carbon footprint of our campaigns. But we don’t stop there. We also offset the carbon footprint of each campaign through various climate projects labeled with the Gold Standard. Gold Standard is a label for emission rights from projects where high demands are placed on the total environmental and social impact of the projects. Several environmental organizations (such as WWF) are behind the label. This means that the carbon footprint a campaign leaves behind in the form of CO2 emissions is compensated 100%. What we do not offset is the impact of the customer’s product, as we do not have control over the effects of sold products or services.

The carbon footprint for a Eurosize Riks is 3,960 kg CO2. To better understand this number, we can compare it to the consumption-based greenhouse gas emissions for the Swedish population. On average, emissions are 173 kg CO2 per person and week. With a Eurosize Riks, you reach 4 million people, which corresponds to a footprint of 28 people per week. With a Digisize Riks, you reach 3.5 million, which amounts to a footprint of 0.6 people per week. Read more about ClimatePartner here.

Supporting Renewable Energy

JCDecaux supports the expansion of green energy in Asia. Interest and demand for renewable energy are growing on the Asian continent. A third of greenhouse gas emissions come from the burning of fossil fuels, such as coal and oil. This type of energy generation is not only finite but also has serious negative effects on the climate.

To reduce CO2 emissions, mitigate climate change impacts, and meet the ever-growing demand for energy, it is important to promote renewable energy sources. Wind, solar, and hydropower are the most popular sources of renewable energy. But energy can also be derived from biogas and biomass. Another renewable source is geothermal energy, which is generated and stored in the earth. The climate project aims to reduce CO2 emissions by replacing energy from fossil fuels and developing technologies that harness renewable energy sources.

The project is labeled Gold Standard.

Our Sustainability Efforts

We are working to reduce our climate impact and aim to halve emissions each decade. Our goal by 2030 is to halve our greenhouse gas emissions compared to the 2020 level. In our emissions calculations, we use CO2 equivalents, which means all greenhouse gases are included.

We began measuring our emissions in 2010 and are proud that our corporate emissions have significantly decreased since then. Between 2014 and 2020, we reduced our carbon footprint by 70% by replacing fossil fuels with fossil-free fuels in our transportation and switching to renewable electricity. We report our emissions according to the GHG Protocol standard, including direct and indirect emissions categorized in scope 1, 2, and 3.

Our largest emissions are from upstream and downstream activities in our value chain. This means emissions occur as a result of our operations but come from sources owned or controlled by entities outside our organization. Within scope 3, advertising campaigns represent a significant portion of our emissions, including production-related emissions from poster production. By offsetting emissions for advertising campaigns, we actively work to reduce the significant scope 3 emissions.

JCDecaux is a ClimatePartner-certified company, which means we have set reduction targets for our company-wide emissions, implemented reduction measures, and financed climate projects.

Since 2010, we have actively worked to minimize our climate impact at all levels.

Certificate

We continue our efforts to reduce emissions by using renewable electricity, gradually replacing all lighting in our equipment with LED lights, and using environmentally friendly transportation. We have replaced all our service cars with electric vehicles and continuously evaluate our partners for minimal climate impact.

JCDecaux strengthens partnership with Childhood

JCDecaux strengthens partnership with Childhood – Advocating for children’s rights

At JCDecaux, we are proud to deepen our partnership with Childhood, an organization founded by Her Royal Highness Queen Silvia in 1999. Childhood works tirelessly to uphold children’s rights and protect vulnerable children both in Sweden and around the world. Through this collaboration, we aim to foster a safer, more equitable society for every child.

Our partnership goes beyond impactful reach via our media surfaces. It also involves raising awareness internally among our employees and externally with clients—through customer events, social media, and newsletters—to boost engagement for children’s rights.

Childhood supports local projects in 16 countries and actively prevents violence and sexual abuse against children in line with the UN Convention on the Rights of the Child. Their vision is a world where all children grow up safe, loved, and free from violence and abuse.

“Partnerships are essential in the fight against sexual abuse of children. We must keep discussing the difficult topics – only then can we drive real change. That’s why we’re thrilled and proud that JCDecaux is now by our side. This visibility is another key piece in our zero-tolerance vision: no child should ever suffer,” says Paula Guillet de Monthoux, Secretary General of World Childhood Foundation.

“Depicting sexual abuse against children is a creative challenge. By incorporating children’s own coloring book illustrations, we brought in a childlike perspective that’s both innocent and unsettling – a powerful contrast that amplifies the message,” says Linnéa Gardefjord and Adam Gäfvert, Art Directors, and Lena Ivarsson, Account Manager at King Advertising Agency.

Who is ClimatePartner?

Who is ClimatePartner?

ClimatePartner is an internationally recognized expert in climate protection and sustainability, calculating and reducing CO2 emissions. Read more here:  https://www.climatepartner.com/en

How are the calculations made?

ClimatePartner has collected data from us; everything from the number of posters, packaging, electricity consumption, transport from printers, depots, and contractors, as well as the company’s footprint in terms of business travel, office materials, recycling, etc. The calculations are made according to the GHG Protocol..

Vad är Greenhouse Gas Protocol?

The Greenhouse Gas Protocol is the most established standard for calculating and reporting greenhouse gas emissions. It is designed to facilitate organizations’ reporting of greenhouse gas emissions and to make climate reporting more transparent, consistent, and comparable across organizations. Read more here: https://ghgprotocol.org/

What are the three scopes?

The GHG Protocol’s standard for calculating companies’ climate impact classifies companies’ emissions into three scopes. Scope 1 consists of direct emissions from the company’s facilities and vehicle fleet, such as greenhouse gas emissions from vehicles and machinery that the company owns or leases. Emissions are called direct because scope 1 consists of emissions over which the company has operational control, as opposed to scope 2 and 3 emissions, over which the company has no control.

Scope 2 consists of indirect emissions from purchased electricity, district heating, district cooling, and steam. Scope 3 consists of indirect emissions from company activities in the company’s value chain.

Scope 3 emissions are usually divided into upstream and downstream emissions depending on whether they occur before or after the company’s own operations in the value chain. Upstream emissions can include purchased goods and services, employee commutes, and business travel, while downstream emissions can include the final waste management of sold products.

How does JCDecaux offset emissions?

How do you ensure the money goes to the right projects?

The project is reviewed by third parties, and projects are carried out by project owners. The project owners “own” the reduction units and receive the funds for the offset.
